Announcer: Elsie Barker grew up in New York. As a young girl, she worked in the markets with her mother and sisters. Her father was a sailor, but he wasn't at home much.
Elsie: I've had a difficult life. I started working when I was a kid. We couldn't go to school, and I have never learned to read or write. I've enjoyed myself, though. I met a lovely man when I was a teenager and got married when I was 16. We went to Niagara for our honeymoon. It was lovely. I've visited lots of places since then, and I've even traveled to Mexico. We have three children, two girls and a boy. Marie is a doctor, Paul is an engineer and Suzy is a hairdresser. They've all bought their own houses and cars. Marie has a baby girl, well, she's a toddler now, and Paul has twin teenage boys. We all live in the same town and see each other often. And I’ve stopped working now so I can look after my grandchildren after school. Yes, it's been a good life.
