The first known use of fingerprinting was in 9th century China, where merchants used their fingerprints to authenticate and record debts. In 14th century Persia, government officials would use their fingerprints in much the same way we use signatures today, but it wasn't until the 19th century that the most significant changes in fingerprinting took place. In 1880, DR. Henry Faulds published a paper on the subject in a scientific journal. He felt that fingerprints could be useful in identifying criminals but the idea was rejected by the police. In 1892, Sir Francis Galton published a report that proved that we all have different fingerprints. In the same year in Argentina, a policeman successfully proved that the fingerprint found at a crime scene could only belong to one person. Fingerprinting on criminal records was first used in India in the late 19th century and then later on in the UK and then the USA.
