Global warming

The majority of scientists agree that the earth is getting warmer and that it will continue to do so if we don't do anything. Burning fossil fuels like oil and coal releases greenhouse gases into the air. These gases prevent heat from escaping the earth's atmosphere and gradually the temperature rises. Deforestation also causes global warming because trees absorb carbon dioxide, one of the greenhouse gases.
As a result of global warming, average sea levels are rising and some animals are migrating to new areas. If global warming continues, some species will inevitably become extinct. There may also be dramatic changes in the weather, such as more storms and floods. Sea levels could rise so high that people have to move away from coastal areas. Droughts may lead to other areas becoming too dry for farming, causing food shortages.
It won't be easy to fix global warming, especially as governments can't agree on what to do about it. Luckily you don't have to wait for them to decide. You can help by making some simple changes to your lifestyle. The most important thing is to reduce the amount of energy you use: turn off lights, the TV and your computer when you aren't using them; only wash your clothes when you have enough to fill the machine; put on an extra layer of clothes rather that turn up the heating; walk or ride your bike more often; and take shorter and colder showers!
